The Maui Travel Guide Every Visitor Must Have

Hi Everyone!! I am so excited to share my Maui Travel Guide with you! If it weren’t for my trip to Maui inspiring me to make BIG life changes, my private practice and this blog might still be on my dream list.

Why Go?

Maui is the second largest Hawaiian island and has so, so much to offer to every type of vacationer – 30 miles of beaches, first class spas and dining, waterfalls, black sand beaches, and more. Multiple, multiple days (or even better – multiple weeks!) are necessary to properly explore all of the adventures that Maui has to offer.

What to Do

The Road to Hana is a must-do in Maui for adventurers. In one day, you’ll see incredible waterfalls, black sand beaches, the Seven Sacred Pools, have endless hike options, and see mountain gulches. We used Shaka Guide. It is a mobile app that explains highlights along the way and lets you know when to stop. The app does not need cellular service, great as you will NOT have internet service for most of the journey. Be mindful that the narrow roads can be nerve-wracking!

Haleakalā National Park’s features a 10,023 foot summit and offers (in my opinion!) the best sunrise, sunset, and stargazing views in the world thanks to limited light and environmental pollution. We hiked inside the crater just after sunrise and recommend being dressed in layers with lots of sunscreen!

Big and Little Beaches in Makena State Park are tucked away beaches on the other side of Wailea. Pay attention to people climbing over Pu’u Olai to find Little Beach, especially on Sunday’s when locals welcome the new week at sunset.

You can’t go to Maui without seeing a luau, and we went to Drums of the Pacific located at Hyatt Regency’s Maui Resort & Spa. Arrive early to enjoy the resort’s grounds, stunning sunset views, and penguins!

Where to Stay

To appreciate all of Maui’s geography, I recommend splitting your time in Maui between the beach and Upcountry Maui. This way, you’ll have easy access to adventure around the Road to Hana, Paia, Haleakalā, and more AND have plenty of time to relax on the beach.

We stayed at a local’s house in upcountry and then switched to Honua Kai Resort & Spa on Ka’anapali Beach for the second half of the visit. Honua Kai allowed us to shift into full relaxation mode thanks to it’s awesome pool service collaboration with Duke’s (Pancakes at the pool? Yes please!), spacious suites and views, and easy access to the Ka’anapali Beach boardwalk, which is several miles and connects you to all of Ka’anapali’s resorts and attractions. Honua Kai offers the perfect combination of top notch resort amenities and at home comforts that are beneficial during longer stays.

PS. Literally the best smelling shampoo 😉

Maui Travel Guide: Where to Eat

Paia was my favorite town in this Maui Travel Guide because of its relaxed pace and local Hawaiian feel and offers some of the best food on the island. We stopped by Milagros (Mexican) twice, Cafe Des Amis (Indian/Mediterranean), and shopped at a true local’s joint, Mana Foods, for food while visiting. Right past Paia is Mama’s Fish House, which has incredible upscale seafood and sunsets.

For Upcountry Maui options, check out Kula Bistro for pasta, Nuka for sushi, and Hali’imaile General Store for a curry seafood dish.

Near Wailea, check out Pita Paradise and absolutely try their baklava ice cream cake!!

Maui Travel Guide: Where to Embrace Wellness

After grand adventures outdoors, Spa Grande at Waldorf Astoria’s Grand Wailea offers endless ways to unwind. We opted for one of their packages, which allowed us to enjoy cycle class, a massage, a full body clay mask and scrub, and a pedicure. All spa guests are encouraged to spend time in the spa’s famous “Health Waters of Maui Hydrotherapy” room and this was my favorite part so get there extra early!

Yoga options are abundant on the island and I recommend checking out the options in Paia as you go with this Maui Travel Guide.

For a calm walk known by locals for incredible views, park your car near Grandma’s Coffeehouse and walk along Thompson Rd. Be prepared for your “Aha Moment” in case you see Oprah leaving her ranch. If you don’t see her, this is the perfect walk to slowly pay attention to the beauty around you. Stop by Grandma’s after for a lunch and baked goods.
