Most Instagrammable Places On Big Island

Hawaii’s Big Island boasts jaw-dropping views of incredible and uncommon sites that would be difficult to find on the mainland. These picture-perfect destinations will make your Instagram shots stick out among the crowd. We’ve compiled a list of the seven of the most Instagrammable places on the Big Island — your feed and followers will thank us.

1. Akaka Falls State Park

Sure, you’ve seen pictures of people posed at Niagara Falls, but did you know Akaka Falls is 2.5 times higher? The falls make any photo look stunning, but midway through the hike there’s a spot where the trail descends and overlooks the waterfall in the distance. This is a family-friendly hike so not only is it great for an Instagram shot — you can print it and put it in your post-trip scrapbook.

2. Punalu’u Black Sand Beach

A black sand beach can make any picture pop. Sure, your friends have Instragram pictures of white sand beaches, but what about the contrast of a black sand beach? Mix the black earth with the bright blue water and emerald palm trees and you have a picture full of color!

3. Po’ohunoa Honaunau “Place of Refuge” National Park

No physical harm could come to those who reached Po’ohunoa Honaunau, the place of refuge. This National Park is not only a symbol of safety and refuge, but it is a beautiful destination with palm trees encircling a hut on the beach, tiki statues lined together, and significant pieces of history scattered throughout!

4. Pololu Valley

Hike through the Pololu Valley to a black sand beach and you’ll get a 2-for-1 Instagram opportunity. Lush greenery and ocean cliffs overlooking the beach provide the backdrop for your shots. Added bonus — you’re hiking a volcano. Not only do you have awesome photos, but you’ll have a cool story too.

5. Waipio Valley Overlook

Head to the “Valley of the Kings” for another 2-in-1 photo opportunity. As you work your way up to the overlook you’ll be surrounded by endless greenery, and at the top, greeted by breathtaking ocean views. You can either hike, drive, or ride your way up on a horse!

6. Mauna Kea Summit Sunset

Mauna Kea during the day is an impressive site, but imagine that with the added colors of sunset and you have a truly stunning scene. Hike to the summit via the six-mile Mauna Kea Trail starting at the Onizuka Visitor Center for epic views and epic pics. **Please note: the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station is currently closed and Mauna Kea Access Road is also closed so the summit is inaccessible.**

After having spent a great morning swimming with turtles, we wanted to get higher to watch the sunset. In 2 hours, we went from the beach to the Mauna Kea summit at more than 4000m high. You need to live it to believe it, it’s a crazy experience! However, at the top you need to change the swimsuit for a woolly hat because it’s freezing up there… But the show is so worth it!⠀ ⠀ #hawaii #lethawaiihappen #visithawaii #kona #bigisland #konahawaii #volcano #sunset #maunakea #maunakeasummit #familytravel #voyageenfamille #voyageavecenfants #voyageavecbebe #gofurther #loveyourtimetogether #travelwithkids #babycantravel #travelwithbaby #takeyourkidseverywhere #littletravellersnetwork #littletraveller #littleadventurer #littleexplorer #travelmadfam #tourdumonde #tourdumondeenfamille

7. Volcanoes National Park

Kilauea Volcano, an active volcano located within Volcanoes National Park, is the most visited volcano in the world and the most popular attraction in Hawaii! Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the natural steam baths and wander your way through the volcano. Stay in the Volcano Village nearby for easy access into the park.
