The 5 Best Beaches On Big Island’s Kohala Coast

The Big Island of Hawaii lives up to its name. It is the largest landmass in the tropical island State. It’s not uncommon for visitors to feel overwhelmed. Have an idea how much ground there is to cover when getting some beaching and sightseeing? Expect beautiful and unique beaches that have something to offer for everyone. From sunbathers to bodyboarders to snorkelers, look no further than the Kohala Coast!

1.   Spencer Beach Park

Spencer park features big, shady trees growing up from the soft, white sand along the Kohala Coast. The reef just off the shore protects the shore from rough waves, making it ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and fishing. The beach is also perfect for parties or camping (with a permit). It has picnic tables, pavilions, electrical outlets, bathrooms, and showers.

Two ancient temples, Pu’ukohola Heiau and Mailekini Heiau, are short walks from the beach.

2.   Hapuna Beach

North of Kailua Kona is Hapuna Beach, with its continuous shore break and sunny weather. Considered one of the best beaches in the world, this family-friendly beach is great for swimming, bodyboarding, sunbathing, or just playing in the sand.

The Three Frogs Cafe makes grabbing something to eat for lunch or renting beach gear very convenient.

Hāpuna is part of the Ala Kahakai coastal trail, which follows the Kohala coast line over ancient trails and roads, to some of the most pristine Hawaiian shorelines.

3.   Kauna’oa Beach (Mauna Kea Hotel)

This beach adopted the name of the Mauna Kea Hotel, which sits beside it. There’s a restaurant, a concession with beach gear, restrooms, and showers. Palm trees provide shade over the cozy, white sand. But the rocky, southern side of the beach offers the best snorkeling in Kohala Coast.

4.   Anaeho’omalu Beach (A-Bay)

Anaeho’omalu Beach, named for its nearby fishponds, has black and white sand. A-Bay is ideal for catching a Big Island sunset, and exploring a piece of history: It was once a thriving fishing village with archaeological sites, heiau (temples), and petroglyphs known across the Kohala coast.

The beach is great for sunbathing, swimming, or surfing, and the northern edge of the bay is the best spot for snorkeling. Moray eels often swim in the shallows. A hut offers scuba tours, water gear rentals, and offers stand up paddle boarding lessons.

Lifeguards on duty, showers, restrooms, and a nearby restaurant all make this beach a safe and comfortable place to spend the day.
